Pompeii tours from Positano — three products and the price of the coast road

Positano is beautiful and badly placed for Pompeii. There is no railway on the Amalfi Coast, so every trip is a road day on the SS163 — roughly forty to seventy minutes each way more than the same trip from Sorrento. Three products start here or nearby, from $160 to $175, and the honest comparison is not between them but between this page and the $41 express tours one town over.

ON THE FROM PRICE — “From” is the floor GetYourGuide advertised on the day we checked, and it moves with their promotions. It is not what you pay: where a product sells several options, the cheapest one you can actually put a date against is usually dearer. We priced all 62 products option by option on 13 August 2026, for one adult on a September weekday, and on 23 of them the bookable price was more than 15% above the advertised floor. The option counts in the table are what came back on that date.
ON THE EURO FIGURES — Euro figures are conversions at the European Central Bank euro reference rates rate of 13 August 2026 (€1 = $1.1534), shown because the park charges in euro and most visitors here do too. They are an indication, not a quote: GetYourGuide bills in the currency you choose on its own site, and its rate on the day will differ from the central bank's.

Three ways this decision usually goes

Our call — A long day made longer by the SS163. Read the return time before planning an evening.

III · Contextus

What this choice actually turns on

Positano's problem with Pompeii is infrastructural, not scenic. The Circumvesuviana line that serves Pompei Scavi runs from Naples through Sorrento and does not reach the Amalfi Coast at all. Every trip from here is therefore a road day on the SS163, and that road is the single biggest line in the price.

The numbers say it plainly. Products starting on the coast run $160–175; the same guided visit from Sorrento, thirty minutes away by train, starts at $41. You are not buying more Pompeii — every option here gives you two to four and a half hours at the ruins, the same as the cheaper ones — you are buying the transfer.

So the recommendation splits by whether your base is fixed. If you are staying in Positano, book from this page, take the earliest pickup offered and treat the quoted duration as optimistic in August. If your itinerary can still move a night, do this trip from Sorrento instead and spend the difference on dinner.

4 things nobody puts in the headline

  1. 01

The SS163 is the product. You are paying for a road, not for more Pompeii. Every one of these tours gives you two to four and a half hours at the ruins; the rest of the price is the coast.

  2. 02

Thin review bases across the board. Twenty-four, 179 and 399 reviews. These are real numbers but they are not the thousands behind the Sorrento and Naples products, and a high average on a small base moves easily.

  3. 03

August traffic has no upper bound. The coast road is famously slow in high season and none of these itineraries can route around it. Treat every quoted duration as the optimistic case.

  4. 04

Pickup points along the coast are a sequence. Being collected first or last changes the length of your day by a lot. Ask where you sit in the loop before assuming the stated duration is yours.

V · Quaestiones

The questions people actually ask

How do you get from Positano to Pompeii?

By road, because there is no alternative — the Amalfi Coast has no railway. A tour with pickup drives the SS163 to Sorrento and then onward, or takes the inland route; independently, the pattern is a bus or ferry to Sorrento and the Circumvesuviana from there. Either way, budget forty to seventy minutes each way more than a Sorrento start.

How much is a Pompeii tour from Positano?

From $160 to $175 in our 7 August 2026 snapshot. That is roughly three to four times the $41–58 express tours from Sorrento, and the difference is almost entirely the road.

Is it worth going to Pompeii from Positano?

Yes, if Positano is where you are staying and you accept the day is mostly transport. If your itinerary is still flexible, the same visit from Sorrento costs a third as much and gives you three more hours. Pompeii is worth the trip; the coast road is what you are actually paying for.

Can I do Pompeii and Vesuvius from Positano?

One product on this page does both, collecting along the coast for an eight to nine hour day. That is a long day by any measure, and on the SS163 in August it is a long day with traffic in it. Read the return time before you plan an evening.

Is there a train from Positano to Pompeii?

No. The Circumvesuviana line that serves Pompei Scavi runs from Naples through Sorrento; it does not reach the Amalfi Coast. Getting to that line from Positano means a bus, a ferry or a car first, which is exactly why the tours here are priced as they are.

Would it be cheaper to base myself in Sorrento?

For Pompeii specifically, yes and decisively — about thirty minutes by train, tours from $41, and the station fifty metres from the gate. Whether that outweighs staying in Positano is a question about your holiday, not about Pompeii, and we are not going to pretend otherwise.

How early do these tours start?

Early enough to matter, because the road is the constraint and the morning ticket window closes at 13:00 for 15,000 of the day's 20,000 entries. Check the pickup time on your voucher the night before — coast pickups run to a sequence and the later stops leave less margin.

Do these tours include the entry ticket?

Every product on this page includes the named entry ticket, which is worth €20 at the gate. Confirm it on the booking page anyway, and book with passport spellings — tickets are named and checked against ID under the daily cap.
