Where to stay for Pompeii — the three bases, compared on numbers
This page compares bases, not hotels. We have no verified accommodation data and will not invent any, so what follows is the part we can stand behind: how far each base is from the gate, what the transport costs, and what guided tours actually price at from each one. On those numbers the answer is clearer than the brochures make it look.
Naples — the Default, and the Cheapest
Thirty-six minutes to Pompei Scavi on the Circumvesuviana, €3.30 one way, trains every twenty to thirty minutes, and the station fifty metres from the Porta Marina entrance. No other big base comes close on cost.
It shows in the tour prices too: guided days from Naples start at $38 with the train included, and a do-it-yourself day is about €26.60 all in. The trade is that Naples is a large working city rather than a resort, and the Circumvesuviana is a commuter line with a pickpocket reputation on this stretch.
Sorrento — Almost as Close, and Easier to Like
About thirty minutes on the same rail line from the other end, and the second-cheapest base by tour price: express guided tours from $41, half-days $59–98. For a lot of itineraries this is the better balance — the ruins stay easy and the evenings are pleasanter.
One thing to watch: several products are sold as 'Naples or Sorrento' and genuinely run from both cities. Choose the wrong departure at checkout and your tour leaves from the other one.
Pompei Town — Closest, and the Least Discussed
The modern town sits immediately outside the site. Staying there removes the commute entirely, which matters most if you want to be at the gate for the 9:00 opening or if you are doing the full day and want to be able to walk back.
The catch is the station trap in reverse: plain Pompei station serves the town and is fifteen to twenty minutes' walk on the wrong side of the site, so check which station your accommodation is actually near before booking around it.
Positano and the Amalfi Coast — Beautiful, Badly Placed
There is no railway on the Amalfi Coast, so every Pompeii trip from Positano is a road day on the SS163 — roughly forty to seventy minutes each way more than a Sorrento start. Tours priced from there run $160–175 against $41 from Sorrento.
That is not an argument against staying in Positano. It is an argument for not judging it by its Pompeii access, and for booking that particular day from the closest point you can reach.
